Should Senior Citizens Purchase a Cell Phone?

By Matt Jones

Cell Phones have fallen in price considerably making them a technology that almost ever consumer can afford. Therefore, cell phones are an item that senior citizens should be considering. We will list off some of the reasons why seniors should get one or have a family member purchase one for them.

Just about everyone needs to have a cell phone today. There is a lot of variety for the person, some need it for:

* Doing business

* Staying in the loop with family and their friends

* Feeling safe and secure

With decrease in expenses and the enhancement in features and the stable call reception cell phones now offer, most seniors could consider using a cell phone as a substitution for their home hard line.

Cell Phone Portability

Even if home bound most of the time, it still makes sense for a senior to have a cell phone with them and to use instead of the hard line. Generally, a hard line phone is tied to one location in the home so making a call requires the senior citizen to have to get up and go to another room to make a call. For many seniors, such is not an easy task. There is nothing more convenient than merely reaching into one's pocket to phone family and friends.

Economical Choice

Many seniors do not switch over to a cell phone as they assume that a cell phone being the newer technology is more expensive to operate. Cell phones have been around for quite a while and with mass adoption, prices have come down.

Because seniors with cell phones are making calls at similar times during the day and to a regular group of users, seniors can take advantage of many plans that are offered by the major carriers that will make sure that they are only paying minimum user rates. There are also several companies which offer prepaid plans that have very competitive rates for out going and incoming calls.

If you don't have a long distance plan at all, a cell phone can often pay for itself within a month or so. One also has the added security that you has a phone on oneself at all times in case of an emergency. Many cell phones have GPS and also have an emergency 'panic' button on the back of the phone. These phones are therefore serving two valuable purposes as they allow the senior cell phone users to stay in touch with friends and also assist with emergency alert.

A New Toy for the Old Boy

Although there will be exceptions most seniors aren't too keen to be spending their golden years time learning new technology. However, many cell phones are specifically for seniors and feature larger buttons and have an large emergency alert button on the back of the phone for easy access.

If they don't like technology don't let this dissuade you as there are cell phone options out there that are just as easy, if not easier, than a lot of the land line handsets that are out there.
