Top Winter Tips for Golfers

By Tim Smith

Playing a round of golf out of season can be beneficial for both amateurs and professionals. With less people on the course, the winter months give players the time and space to improve their swing and overall technique before the warmer months ahead. For first time players this is a great opportunity to take advantage of the discounted lesson prices around and learn the basics before the season begins.

For both regular golfers and amateurs a round of golf in the winter can be surprisingly beneficial. With fewer golfers on the course it can give you the time and opportunity to improve your game. For first time golfers, lesson prices are also reduced significantly during the colder months.

However there will always be challenges facing all golfers during the winter with water logged fairways, strong winds, overgrown rough and temporary greens to name a few. Yet for golfers who simply wish to carry on all year round here are a few key things to bear in mind and improve your winter game.

Technical advice for winter golf

Keep your ball at room temperature - The cold, dense winter air will have a major effect on your ball, causing it to harden and compress, preventing the ball from travelling as far. A useful tip is to heat your golf balls on a radiator before heading out and keep a few in your pocket, ensuring each ball is at optimum temperature.

Try and keep your golf balls dry and warm - Heat your golf balls up on a radiator at home before you leave and try to keep a few in your pocket, swapping after each round. This should ensure your golf balls are kept at optimum temperature, even in the cold air which can cause your ball to harden and compress.

Use winter rules to maintain a realistic score - When playing out of season many players often prefer to use 'preferred lies' amongst friends in order to keep their handicap low before spring. Which rules you decide to use is up to you, however many people choose to allow others to pick up and clean their clubs and golf balls for a more precise shot.

Use a golf GPS device to improve your visibility - The colder months will cause you to play under different weather conditions including heavy rain, snowfall and dense fog, causing your visibility to be limited. Golf GPS systems will improve your overall awareness on the freeway as well as calculating distances to any position on over 5500 courses across the UK and Europe.
